Too embarrassed to go to they gym, many people may decide to walk one day and maybe it will last a little while before they quit. Unless they have a very high intention to lose weight and the gumption to do it on their own, they will need some support.
I am not saying people who carry more weight cant do it. Many set their mind on eating well, finding a good exercise program, and stay with it. And they succeed.
What about the ones who yearn to go workout in a facility where there is equipment they would like to use that they do not have at home? They would like to meet people, but they feel insecure and worry about what others think.
The only thing that matters is that you who carry more weight or those of you who want to gain muscle if you are too skinny have every right to go to any recreational center or gym and enjoy getting in shape. So, what is stopping you?
People will stare and judge me because I am overweight or bony
What is a gym for? It is there to help people lose weight and get in shape or gain muscle in order to have shape. I would hope that people would be so busy working out and be mature enough to not act like an kid that they would mind their own business. If there are people who want to stare or snicker, that is their problem, and they do have a problem. Just because people are not overweight doesnt mean they are the only ones welcome there.
I have met many trainers who enjoy working with people of size, because they truly care about them.
Can you imagine down the road comparing your before and after pictures? Write down your goals, but do not pressure yourself. Just take it day by day and never give up on yourself.
Millions of people have lost weight and kept it off. I am one of them. However, there are people along the way who give advice, because they have been brainwashed that you have to be a skeleton to model or act. I lived in Los Angeles at my largest weight and took acting classes.
I was told by one of the acting teachers (she was female) that I needed to lose weight. She wasnt so thin herself. If she was any kind of intelligent teacher, she would know that there are roles for people of all shapes and sizes.
Another male teacher told me I needed to see a therapist. Cussing people while they are on stage trying to do a scene is a big distraction and does not teach anything.
I believe some people who are teachers enjoy putting down students. I would rather look for the positive in a person and show them how they can use those attributes to improve.
I will honestly tell you I had one wonderful acting instructor who was great to me and loved my southern accent. He told me, Do not change your accent. To this day, I can hear his vivacious laugh as he enjoyed our improvised scenes.
So, some people will look for the flaws. I call it a power thing. I got certified in an exercise course and I tell you, the master teachers tore us apart. I was in shape, and when I was demonstrating my teaching, I got told off. I taught exactly the way the lady who had created these exercises taught. And these teachers wanted to change things.
You have the power to change your life. You are worth something in this world. There are always going to be those out there who try to bring others down. They are really the weak ones.
So, I learned from the exercise certification experience, too. I choose to look for the good and use the good to improve myself. When I fall down, I get up. We all have resources inside of us to help ourselves.
As a matter of fact, it was in Los Angeles that I lost all of my weight for myself. I had been done with acting classes for a while, and I was just ready.
It is perfectly okay to get help, but if a trainer is not respectful, tell him or her, Youre fired. Never take abuse from a trainer. They work for you. Never take abuse from anybody.
When my son went to preschool, I started going to a recreation center. The trainer I had when I went there wasnt helping me. He was the wanna be therapist type. I told him I felt I was spreading out instead of toning up. He said to me, Well, youre 40. I never went back.
Most of his clients had been with him for years. One large lady had been with him for 10 years and would gain and lose the same 50 pounds. He was making $75 an hour from his clients and this lady needed to change what she was doing, and he needed the integrity to tell her that he couldnt help her.
His protocol was to ask his clients if they were centered. I got tired of hearing that, but some people are so intimidated that they are afraid to get rid of a trainer, therapist, or perhaps a friend who is not treating them well.
What workout should You start out with?
First off, you should have a complete physical whether youre overweight or skinny. Yes, there are skinny people who are too shy to go to a gym. Wear comfortable clothes and good tennis shoes. Bring a water bottle. If you cannot afford a trainer, have someone at the gym show you how to use the weight machines and other equipment.
You can also check into some beginning exercise classes. A lot of recreation centers have cheap classes, a swimming pool, and a track where you can walk a while to warm up or you can ride an exercise bike to warm up. Please try different workouts. Do not stay on the treadmill, elliptical, or bike all the time. Take classes and learn new things. Go at your own pace.
If you can afford a trainer, make sure he or she is well-suited for you and let the trainer know that you are there to lose weight and get in shape. If you are one of those very skinny people who wants to add some muscle to give you some shape, let your trainer know. They are there to serve you and they are suppose to be trained to help.
A good trainer will weigh you, get your measurements, and start you on a program where you can advance and get results.
If they are sarcastic with you and put you down, drop that trainer. If you have food issues, you may be better off going to a nutritionist and some gyms may employ one. If not a nutritionist, a therapist may be needed to help you with food issues.
Trainers might be able to recommend some eating plans but they are not therapists. Do not ever let them berate you. They are to encourage you. But remember, it works both ways. You have to do your part. I would fire a trainer who doesnt seem present when they are training me. However, there are many caring trainers, so do your part so you can progress. It is a process and it will takes some time. It will be well worth it.
I bet youll have more support than you think
Focus. You are there, because you care enough about your health and body. Focus on every workout, and that will be focusing on improving yourself. We all can use some self-improvement. Youll be amazed that the better you treat yourself, the better people treat you.
It is our inner state that pushes people away or attracts people to us. You want to attract people who treat you with respect. Remember, above all else you are there to take care of yourself. You will see results if you put your focus on yourself. If you are able to help yourself, one day youll be able to help someone who is going through what youve been through. Below is a woman who lost weight. The picture beside it is the other extreme. You have an anorexic or just a young skinny lady who is too thin who built her body up and the more muscle she built, the more she could eat.
